Simple Occupied Bed

Procedure

  1. Explain the procedure to the patient and gain consent; work with a second nurse where possible.
  2. Screen the bed, wash hands and don gloves and apron.
  3. Bring the linen to the bedside and place it on a chair in order of use.
  4. Loosen the bedclothes all round and remove the top bedding, covering the patient with a bath blanket.
  5. Turn the patient to one side with support, and roll the soiled bottom linen towards the patient’s back.
  6. Clean and dry the exposed mattress, then lay the clean bottom sheet and roll the surplus against the soiled roll.
  7. Turn the patient over the ridge to the clean side, supported by the second nurse.
  8. Remove the soiled linen into the bag, unroll and tighten the clean sheet, and mitre the corners.
  9. Reposition the patient, replace the top sheet and blanket with a toe pleat, and change the pillowcases.
  10. Leave the patient comfortable with the call bell in reach; clear away, wash hands and document skin observations.
