Admission Bed

Procedure

  1. Confirm the expected admission and any special needs from the referring unit.
  2. Wash hands and make a simple unoccupied bed with clean linen.
  3. Fold the top bedclothes back in a pack, or fanfold them to the far side so the patient can get in easily.
  4. Place a mackintosh and draw sheet in the middle third.
  5. Check the mattress, bed rails, brakes and height, and lower the bed to the safe entry level.
  6. Equip the unit: locker, chair, call bell, sputum mug, urinal or bedpan and a receiver.
  7. Place the observation chart, fluid chart and folder holder at the bed.
  8. Add any anticipated equipment — oxygen point, suction, drip stand or bed cradle.
  9. Check the light, fan and screen work, then report the bed ready in the bed-state book.
