Developing an Interpersonal Relationship (Rapport)
Procedure
- Approach the patient at eye level and greet them in their preferred language.
- Introduce yourself by name and role, and ask how they wish to be addressed.
- Provide privacy and sit rather than stand over the patient.
- Use open questions and allow the patient to speak without interruption.
- Listen actively — nod, summarise and reflect back what you have heard.
- Observe non-verbal cues: facial expression, posture, tone and eye contact.
- Show empathy and avoid false reassurance or judgement.
- Assure confidentiality and explain what information you must share with the team.
- Close by agreeing the next step, and keep every promise you make.
